Seafood Cooking Times

 

It’s a no-brainer that seafood is delicious and nutritious, but did you know how quickly it can be prepared at home?

 

Fish and shellfish are some of the fastest-cooking proteins, making them ideal for quick and healthy meals. Although the thickness of the fish you choose can affect the cooking time, many cuts of fish are done in 10 minutes or less. A good rule of thumb for preparing fish, like cod or tilapia, is to measure the fish at its thickest point and cook 10 minutes for every inch of thickness, turning halfway through. If you prefer your fish under ½ inch thick, you don’t even have to turn it over.

Another tip to keep in mind is that white fish will turn opaque and flake easily when fully cooked. As if cooking fish couldn’t get any quicker, shellfish might take the cake when it comes to speedy seafood meals. Clams, oysters and mussels in the shell will only take 15 minutes total to cook in boiling water. Both clams and mussels will open, signaling readiness. Depending on their size, shrimp can be cooked in 5 minutes or less.
